How is Christmas Celebrated in Australia?

So, what is Christmas down under? Christmas in Australia is very much based on British and other  European traditions. It’s a very festive time, except we don’t have the cold and the snow.

We definitely have the heat, but even with that heat, it’s not unusual for us to enjoy a full roast dinner.

Usually, the roast is at lunchtime, though some people celebrate their Christmas dinner on Christmas Eve and swap presents then. But mostly, it’s done on Christmas Day because of the heat.

It’s not unusual for us to go outside and enjoy a “barbie” often served with salad. It’s a little more accommodating than being stuck in a hot kitchen on Christmas Day.

Festivities Throughout December

The Christmas celebrations can continue throughout December. It’s the end of the school year, so there’s a lot happening in schools: fairs, nativity plays, and all sorts of activities.

Even in the community, there’s plenty going on: carols by candlelight, Christmas light switch-ons in local areas, and more.

Australia isn’t really a tipping culture, but Christmas becomes a time of giving. People make donations, and you might see street coin collections for local life-saving clubs or other community causes.

What is there to do on Christmas in Australia?

It’s a very busy, happy time; a time to spend with family and friends, catch up, and enjoy each other’s company.

If you’re a new arrival, it can be lonely watching others together on social media. Please don’t just sit back and feel sorry for yourself. Get involved in community events, even in a small way, and check your local council’s website for ideas.

To make it easier, we’ve put together a list of city websites showcasing their featured Christmas activities. Whether you’re looking for carols by candlelight, festive markets, or local community events, these guides will help you join in the celebrations and feel part of the holiday spirit:

If there are new arrivals in your community, please reach out to them. Make them feel welcome and ensure they have someone to connect with over the holidays.

Our Office Hours and Looking Ahead

Our offices will be closed only between Christmas and the New Year. We are available for active relocations, and we have many relocations scheduled for January. We’ll just be putting our feet up for that one week so that we’re recharged and ready for you in the New Year.

From everyone here at Personal Relocations, happy holidays! Let’s be kind and considerate of others. See you next year!
